We parked at the Cat Cafe (get real name) and ended our ride eating at the Birdseye Diner across the road. The best diner in New England, as far as I am concerned!

We road north on East Hubbardton Road for almost 8 mights of solid climbing. The grade wasn’t too steep though, and the views were spectacular. At the end of the road, we found ourselves at practically the entrance of a VT state historic site, Monument Hill, the site of the Hubbardton Battlefield. This, apparently, was the only revolutionary war battle fought in Vermont.

From the battlefield, you then head right on St. John Road, and head down, down, down on really good gravel. You take a left turn on Howland Road and another on Pencil Mill road, and finally down a wide paved road- Stables Rd- into Castleton again. This is a beautiful ride, full of interesting sites and history.

We finished up by having lunch at the Birdseye Diner – an old fashioned diner with a great vegetarian selection.
